The prefecture of Ioannina, with its capital, city of Ioannina, is one of the largest prefectures in Greece and occupies almost half of the area of the geographical department of Epirus, which is located on the northwest side of the country. Mountainous volumes, part of which belongs to the Pindos mountain range, cover of its area. In the city of Ioannina is located the famous Lake Pamvotis or else Lake of Ioannina.
The first signs of human activity in the area of Ioannina are traced in the Paleolithic era 38,000 years ago.
The city of Ioannina was founded in the 6th AD century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. The area has experienced various incursions from other people, especially the Slavs and the Normans, while in the 13th AD century the Despotate of Epirus was founded by Michael Komnenos I.

One has to visit the museum of the wax sculptures in Ioannina, the largest and most important in Greece, as well as the castle of the city.
